There is nothing quite like enjoying a nice, hot, bowl of soup. It can make any day better but when you do it on a chilly or rainy day, it just seems to be the perfect companion.
French onion soup has been a favorite for many over the years but there has been a problem with preparing it. Unless you have just the right setup and the skills necessary in the kitchen, it never seems to come out right.
That is about to change, thanks to this simple French onion soup recipe. You can easily make it at home and enjoy it while it is fresh and the cheese is still bubbling. Enjoy.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup of butter
1/4 cup of olive oil
1/2 teaspoon of sugar
– Thinly slice four big yellow onions.
3/4 teaspoon of dried thyme 6 cups of beef broth
Adjust with salt and pepper, if desired.
1 ring of sliced baguette
Two cups of Gruyère cheese, or Swiss cheese, gratedDirections:
1: While the olive oil and butter are melting in a big saucepan, set the heat to medium. Toss in the sugar and chopped onions. Once the onions begin to soften and get a golden brown color, cook for another 25-30 minutes, stirring often.
Finally, stir in the dried thyme and beef broth. After the ingredients have come to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for fifteen to twenty minutes. Add black pepper and salt to taste.2: Get the broiler ready while the soup is simmering. Toast the baguette slices for a minute or two on each side in the oven until they become a golden brown and are crisp.
3: In oven-safe bowls, ladle the heated soup and top with a toasted bread slice. On top of the toast, generously sprinkle grated Gruyère cheese.
4: After three to five minutes under the broiler, the cheese should be melted and bubbling in the bowls. Beep if you want to keep from burning.
5: Take it out of the oven with care and serve hot, topping it with more bread if you want.
